Q: I just bought a few acres and, since I am not finnacialy ready to build our "dream home", i wish to build a pool/guest house first which we will live in for several years. I am thinking of using a metal building for this purpose. My plan is to have minimal interior partitions (a few bedrooms, bath, and laundry), to have a large "studio" living area. For the studio space (40'X40') I was thinking of leaving it exposed to the structure. However, I am worried about my heating/cooling load with only 4" of vinyl insulation (I am in South Louisiana). Additionally, (for asthetic purposes) I want to use "black" faced vinyl and a medium color (green) metal roof and wall panels. Considering our hot climate...am I asking for it? On the plus side, all ...
A: Yes, I think if you are going to use it for a living space your a/c or heat will run a lot. Don't forget in the typical metal building installation the fiberglass is crushed to almost nothing above the purlins. The only way to do better is to get a standing seam roof with thermal spacers. A more expensive roof but thermally much better. Your other option would be to get with Thermal Design, tell them what you want to do and get a quote from them for an adaquately & correctly insulated roof and wall system.
