44'x180' building for sale
For sale is a 44 foot x 180 foot metal building. This was a hanger at San Luis Obispo Airport. It would make a great barn, tractor storage, boat storage, or ????. Has 2 end walls (44' side) and sliding doors on both of the 180' sides. Some doors and windows were cut in the end walls. Q: We are interested in contracting with a company in the Northern California area to paint metal parts in custom colors. Do you have a listing or referrals of specialty painting companies for metal buildings, panels, etc.? Thank you.
A: MIKE: If you are talking about quantity in metal panels (tonnage) There are a number of Pre-coat companies who do custom color in 5 or 10 ton quant. For job shop type work, contact local chambers of commerce AND contractors associations in your area. The Pre-coaters do it in coils for roll forming after coating and there are any number of roll formers who will form panels from your chosen color coils.

Q: WHAT IS RECOMMENDED FOR RECOATING A STANDING SEAM METAL ROOF? WE NEED TO ONLY CHANGE THE COLOR OF THE ROOF, IT IS IN GOOD CONDITION ONLY 2 YEARS OLD. WE ARE LOCATED ON THE OCEAN IN NORTHERN CALIFORNIA.
A: Domminic, There are a couple of things to consider when refinishing an existing metal panel. The most important is the type of finish on the existing panel. If the existing panel is galvalume (silver looking finish) the panel will probably need to be etched with some material to allow bonding of a colored paint finish to the panel. If the existing panel is painted it will depend on the type of existing paint finish as to what material would be suitable to apply. Most older steel panels (over 15 yrs old) will have a silconized polyester paint which will be relatively easy to re-finish once any existing chalking has been cleaned off. Newer panels may have a high gloss Kynar or equlivant finish which will have some unique bonding is...

Q: We are installing windows in our metal hanger and cannot find a local source for metal window flashing and base closure profile foam. Do you know of a source in San Diego or Southern California?

Q: HI I have a question. I recently put up a Steelmaster building in California for my girlfriend. Id like to frame up end walls for it this summer. These arent load bearing walls and will be toed in to the building. The building is a modified arch. Could I frame the end walls conventionally with eight foot walls then tie in to the top of the building with studs tied in above the eight foot wall? Or is it preferable to run the studs all the way up when framing. Iam going to use 16 inch centers and there will be one sliding door and one window on the end. Thankyou Carl Bledsoe
A: Hi Carl: I'll risk sounding like Captain Obvious here: Have you asked Steelmaster what they recommend? I'm sure they're faced with the constantly, and they probably even have drawings available to back up their recommendations. Q: I am working with a learning institution in the San Fransisco area and we are interested in metal buildings. We have put up about $8 million worth of stick built new const. in the last 3 years to build out our existing campus [at around $300/ft]and are very comfortable with this process. But it's expensive and slow, so I have been looking on line at high end metal buildings as potential for our next phase. As early as the summer of 2007, we are looking to break ground on our new campus, and would appreciate your recomendations concerning help with this project. A: Sydney, Your are probably every metal building contractors dream. My guess however is that as with most public institutions you will need to get some plans drawn and put those plans out to bid among a group of qualified and bondable contractors. So my next guess would be that you need to locate some innovative architects that understand metal systems and just what they will and will not do. There is a great magazine out there called Metal Architecture that is dedicated to bringing information about metal systems to the architectural community and acknowledging the terrific works done by individuals and firms with metal structures. Q: We need help please. We are a nonprofit in California trying to renovate a metal building for our animal sanctuary. We want to add doors, windows, and insulation. Our question is do the doors and windows need to be a special kind or will standard windows and doors (doors made of metal) used in homes be acceptable? A: Julie, Thanks for your question. Yes metal buildings use special doors and windows. The doors will require additional steel channel framing to support them and trim to flash the opening correctly. The windows usually do not but that does depend in part where they are installed. I would recommend getting with a qualified "pre-engineered building erector" about installing what you need. You could try the "Yellow" pages or contact the "Metal Building Contractors and Erectors Assoc" (MBCEA). A local metal building contractor may be able to help you get in contact with the right people. A: Although metal roofing panels have come along way over the past decade, they still will appear "metal-like" because of the coatings used for finishing. The use of metal panels will have to be a personal choice between security & value vs. curb appeal.
