METALCON Introduces New Conference Format

   Author: Marge O'Connor
Location: Newton, MA

June 1, 2012, Newton, MA – Known for being a trendsetter, METALCON International has once again hit the mark with its latest method of advancing education at this renowned international conference and exposition. The 2012 METALCON education format offers more indepth learning opportunities both in the classroom and on the exhibit floor. It provides up to 30 hours of education while moving from the traditional 1.5-hour multiple-track program to longer sessions tailored to specific disciplines led by a team of experts.

According to Claire Kilcoyne, METALCON Show Director, the format is more efficient for attendees while offering them a more valuable learning experience. “We created this concept based on research with attendees and speakers. The 3-hour format helps focus on details of a specific course. Attendees can earn 3 hours of AIA Learning Units and 3 Professional Development Hours (PDHs) for each full session they attend. This can maximize attendees’ time by allowing them to plan a full day of education with sessions in the morning followed up with live demonstrations on the show floor in the afternoon. Because it’s so comprehensive we’ve themed the conference Education, Empowerment, Excellence.”

The new format offers five sessions per day that run from 8:30 to 11:45 a.m., with a 15-minute break, on Tuesday and Wednesday, October 9 and 10. Topics are designed to meet the needs of Residential Roofing Contractors; Commercial Roofing Contractors; Cold-Formed Steel Design Professionals; Architects and Engineers; Building Owners/Developers/Facility Managers; and Metal Product Manufacturers.

Sample topics for Residential Roofing Contractors are “The Science of Selling Metal Roofing to Home Owners, Part I,” on Tuesday, with Brian Smith, of David Yoho Associates, Fairfax, VA. Part II is offered on Wednesday, taught by Brian Smith, Frank Farmer, president of American Metal Roofs, Inc., Flint, MI; and Tim Musch, VP of MarketSharp software, Lacrosse, WI.

Commercial Roofing Contractors can choose Tuesday’s topic, “Learn from the Metal Experts and Become One”, with Rob Haddock, President of The Metal Roof Advisory Group, Colorado Springs, CO; and Mike Bennett, NCI Group, Inc., Houston, TX; or Wednesday’s program “Metal Roof Retrofit – KISS Method”, presented by Chuck Howard, Metal Roof Consultants, Cary, NC.

Tuesday’s program for Architects, Engineers, and Design Professionals features “Expanding Your Vision, Opportunities with Metal “ presented by Peter Pfeiffer, FAIA, Barley Pfeiffer Architects, Austin, TX, and Mike McGrath, President, MG McGrath Inc., Maplewood, MN.

Wednesday’s topic for Metal Product Manufacturers includes, “Getting your Metal Product Specified” with Ron Blank and Landon Boone, both of Ron Blank and Associates, San Antonio, TX.

Building Owners, Facility Managers and Developers can learn how to avoid future problems in a session on how to avoid the pitfalls of a “roof from hell” with experts Chuck Howard, Metal Roofing Consultants, Cary, NC; and Scott Kriner, Green Metal Consulting, Macungie, PA.

Cold-Formed Steel Design Professionals as well as all design professionals can participate in the popular revised STUD University, Part I and Part II programs on Tuesday and Wednesday. These programs include classroom and hands-on sessions presented by Danny Feazell of Premium Steel Building Systems, Roanoke, VA and Nader Elhajj, of FRAMECAD Solutions USA Inc., Fairfax , VA; and Maribeth Rizzuto of the Steel Framing Alliance, Washington, DC. STUD U is a hands-on program offered by the SFA and run exclusively at METALCON. Additional programs are by related associations, including the Metal Building Contractors and Erectors Association.

The 2012 METALCON International takes place October 9-11, 2012 at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center, Rosemont, IL. It remains the only annual trade show and conference focused on the applications of metal in industrial, institutional, light commercial and residential building projects.

The event draws designers, builders, developers, contractors, fabricators, and suppliers from more than 52 countries. Experts from 300 companies exhibit the latest products and technology and share their knowledge with attendees, while industry specialists present key topics in the education program. Industry experts from the Metal Construction Association also present the latest applications and field techniques in daily demonstrations in the exhibit hall.

METALCON features nearly 800 booths filled with the latest building products and services for those who design and build with metal – or want to learn all about metal. It also highlights sustainable products and ideas with: Green Island, an exhibit area featuring metal-related products that meet green building standards; and Solar Bay, a special pavilion in the show featuring educational forums and Solar Bay Live where world renowned experts use full-scale mock-ups of a variety of solar technologies on metal roofs and walls to present live-action demos that offer tips and trade secrets about the business of installing solar technology with metal roofing and walls.

METALCON is produced by Newton, MA-based PSMJ Resources, Inc. and sponsored by the Metal Construction Association. In addition, 100 associations and publications representing various industry segments support METALCON through their ongoing promotional efforts.
