Multiple ATAS Projects Are MCA Award Winners

Allentown, Pa.: Nov. 1, 2013, – ATAS International, Inc. is proud to announce it is the recipient of three Chairman’s Awards from the Metal Construction Association, Glenview, Ill. A private residence in Takoma Park, Md., won the Residential category, and Sherwood Middle School in Shrewsbury, Mass., won the Education-Primary and Secondary Schools category. Stepping Stones Preschool Addition at Ancillae Assumpta Academy, Wyncote, Pa., received an Honorable Mention for Exceptional Choice of Material. The annual Chairman's Awards are given to outstanding building projects involving MCA members. The awards honor innovation and creativity while showcasing how metal products help achieve exceptional building designs. A panel of noteworthy architects selected the winners.

For the private residence, contractor and homeowner Alan Kanner wanted his house to respect its hilly, wooded surroundings while also being creative, cool and fun. Kanner called on McInturff Architects, Bethesda, Md., to transform the 1,700-square-foot house by adding a second floor for three bedrooms and two bathrooms, leaving the main level and basement for living, dining and entertaining. The exterior became a unique, playful expression of shadows and texture with ATAS metal wall panels. The 0.032-inch aluminum Opaline (OPM045) panels in Black clad the exterior. Opaline is a structural panel that can be installed on open framing as well as a solid substrate. Opaline installs as a tongue-and-groove system with mechanical fasteners that are hidden by the adjacent panel. The distributor was The Roof Center, Brentwood, Md. The judges thought this unique project contrasted well with the surrounding forest, and they admired the simple use of materials throughout the whole façade and attention to changing textures based on panel orientation.

Sherwood Middle School utilizes a simple technology to add energy efficiency to the structure that achieved credits in the Massachusetts Collaborative for High Performance Schools. That technology is InSpire, a transpired solar collector wall system from ATAS. The panels are 0.032-inch aluminum in a Classic Bronze finish; about 3,800 square feet of the panels were installed by LYMO Construction, Worcester, Mass. The panels were distributed by Beacon Sales, Manchester, N.H. The concept of InSpire is to preheat outside air before it enters a building, lowering energy consumption and decreasing utility bills. The system provides fresh, outside air that is essential to both teaching and learning. This is accomplished when the sun’s energy is absorbed by the metal panels, heating the air at the surface. Proprietary engineered perforations in the panels provide a passageway for the air to move through the collector into a building’s duct system. The judges took note of the dynamic façade, especially the energy savings realized from the system that supplements interior heating. The judges appreciated that Lamoureux Pagano Associates Architects, Worcester, put a lot of time into the design.

As the first building to greet parents and students when they arrive at Ancillae Assumpta Academy, Stepping Stones is a playful and educational example of architecture and construction. CastleTop (HCT160) 0.032-inch aluminum wall panels from ATAS were used in a Rawhide color (2,120 square feet) and Regal Blue color (159 square feet) to create a Dr. Seuss-like appearance on sloped walls. Using this metal profile provided shadows, texture and color like no other material could. The architect John J. Di Benedetto Associates Architects Inc., Jenkintown, Pa., believes the metal shingles add a graphic punch to the building. The distributor was Alside Supply Center, Warminster, Pa., and the installer was Griffith Exteriors Inc., Warminster.

Clearly the designers, contractors and building owners also deserve high praise for their ingenuity and craftsmanship. ATAS has four manufacturing facilities in the United States: two facilities, including the headquarters, in Allentown, Pa.; one in Maryville, Tenn.; and one in Mesa, Ariz. All ATAS locations are certified to ISO 9001:2008 with design.
