New Patent Issued for Air-Cooled Residential Metal Roof Application

   Author: D.V. "Red" McConnohie
Location: Tampa, FL

John Cooper of California, devised an answer to the power starved State of California that reduces homeowners heating and cooling costs. John's plan utilizes the conventional elements of roof structure up through the plywood deck and roof felt. At that point he employed a series of steel miniature "Z" purlins two to 3 inches high,3 to 4 ft. spacing, having a series of holes punched through the web section . The final roof application is "lifetime" structural roof panels securely fastened to the miniature "Z" purlins.

The resulting 2 to 3 inch cavity space is then vented at the eave and ridge to allow movement of external ambient air from eave intake to ridge venting . The result is notable by effectively reducing the radiant heat load on the decking and roof felt layer below the new metal roof which is the most damaging element that requires expensive re-roofing of asphaltic materials now in wide use.

Attics remain noticeably cooler thus reducing the interior heat loads requiring energy for further cooling. With Patent now in hand, Cooper is nearly ready to license various national companies and Metal Roofing Manufacturers serving the residential construction and re-roofing markets .

Roof Hugger, Inc. worked with John and encouraged him to pursue his novel design as well as furnishing the perforated "Z" sections used in his application . Roof Hugger, Inc. (Dale Nelson, Pres. and D.V. Red Mc-1, Partner and director) are currently working toward an agreement with John Cooper that will allow Roof Hugger to become the National representative of the system and introduce it to the Far Flung metal Roofing suppliers, contractors and Roofers that have been the source of great success for Roof Hugger, Inc.

We believe the "System" could become a major factor in encouraging much wider use of metal in the residential field .
