Posted 3/31/03: Dominion Building Products Introduces Windstorm Approved Doors

   Author: Aaron Clow
Location: Elkhart, IN

Dominion Building Products, the the leading steel door and aluminum window supplier to the Metal Building Industry for two decades, has successfully tested and passed 4 door lines with various windstorm and impact resistance requirements for metal buildings. This makes Dominion the first and only door company to earn Wind Storm compliance for metal building applications.

Wind Speed tests have become hot topics in the construction industry and while the codes have been around for several years, it is only recently that the push for compliance has really been implemented. Dade County is possibly the most well known, but the State of Florida Building Code, Southern Building Code, and Texas Department of Insurance are just a few that are having strong and growing influence. While many of these codes are coastal, of more global significance is the International Building Code (IBC), which is systematically being adopted across the country, has established a minimum wind speed requirement for every region in America.

While each code has some variance, each takes an aggressive direction in requiring that wall accessories such as doors and windows must be tested with the fastening, framing, and wall system in which they will be used. Significantly, that means that for the metal wall industry, all doors used in Metal walls must be tested in Metal walls. Says Dominion spokesman Aaron Clow, “The significance of this testing is enormous. To my knowledge, Dominion has the only door that has passed these challenging tests for metal wall. As these codes are better understood and more strictly enforced, the need for a door system tested for metal wall becomes apparent.” The increasingly universal adoption of these and similar codes does indicate that the idea that “just any door will do” is a thing of the past.

Dominion’s products will be labeled to insure conformance to the approved “Windstorm” codes. Dominion also plans to include the fasteners for proper installation. They project a minimal charge for a fastener package and for the label (yet to be determined).

Though the tests are completed and passed, Dominion is awaiting the final documentation. They project the first doors will be available for sale approximately June 1, 2003. Additional code adoptions and approvals may be forthcoming.

Dominion has passed all three major wind speed tests including:
110 mph, 130 mph, and 150 mph wind speed test
